Our CIA Encounter
by Sonia Brown
“Avoid
it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.” (Proverbs
4:15)
It was a memorial day in the historic city
of Washington, D.C. My husband, Tom, and I were touring some of the great
sites. We had already visited places like the White House (amazingly small),
The U.S. Capitol, U. S. Supreme Court, Arlington Cemetery, Lincoln and
Jefferson memorials, Kennedy Center, Washington Monument, and the different
National Museums. We even ate at some of the recommended restaurants and
enjoyed a variety of cuisines. We were having the time of our lives.
That day we decided to take a drive to
eighteenth-century plantation of our favorite president, George Washington.
It was a remarkable home. I was surprised with all of the acres that he
possessed. It was a vast piece of land. We also viewed the Potomac River
from his mansion. Simply stunning.
The vacation was quickly coming to an end.
We finished the momentous day and headed home to our hotel when my “dearly
beloved” husband got lost. We were on the freeway and like any reasonable
wife I told him to pull to the side and look over the map. Kindly ignoring
me he kept driving until he became aware of things he didn’t remember
seeing.
I was admiring the scenery and noticed an
exit sign that read, “Central Intelligence Agency”.
Tom said, “Hey, if anyone can tell us how
to get back to our hotel it would be the CIA”.
I remarked, “You’re crazy! Just pull over
and read the map.”
He pulled over alright…right in
front of the CIA’s security gate! There were armed guards with machine
guns and watch dogs.
Tom took out the map nonchalantly and began
to read it when I nervously brought to his attention. “Tom, Tom, Tom! There
are men with guns running towards us. Please let’s get out of here!”
He looked up…shocked! Flung his map in the
back seat and quickly spun off. I could only imagine what they must have
thought about us in front of their gate looking over a map!
Sometimes we get lost in life. Other things
or people distract us from where we really should be. We lose our direction
and forget the path in which God has called us to travel. We lose site and
find ourselves in a heap of trouble.
Don’t hang around those who are always
causing mischief. Take sin seriously. God’s word says to avoid the path of
the wicked at all cost.
The CIA took their job seriously even
though we didn’t. I highly respect them for that but I also learned on that
gripping day to avoid not only the path of the wicked but to avoid the gate
of the CIA.
